Euthanasia Euthanasia, as defined by the Encarta Encyclopedia, is the â€Å"practice of mercifully ending a person’s life in order to release the person from incurable disease, intolerable suffering, or undignified death† (Encarta, 2004). Euthanasia is a Greek word, which means â€Å"good death.† As humans, we understand death is something we cannot avoid but having some control over death is empowering and reassuring to us. If someone is suffering from a terminal illness, intolerable pain, or in a long-term coma, euthanasia is an acceptable option for someone to end his or her life. With the consent of their doctor(s) these people should be able to have the law on their side supporting their decisions. Euthanasia is a choice for people whose lives have no redeeming value to them or their loved ones and they are already faced with eminent death. It is incredibly painful to watch someone you love go through so much hardship and strife in order to die. Death is a natural occurrence in all our lives. The more active we can be in deciding when death occurs, the less frightening it will be. The power to decide when to die makes the individual take comfort in the fact that his loved-ones will be in less pain, for a shorter time in these last days. The plot of the story develops around Gittes job as a private investigator, and Gittes researches the background information of the water system for Los Angeles. Through Gittes investigation, the sudden death of Mr. Mulwray becomes the main plot line of the story. Ms. Mulwray, the wife hires Jake Gittes to investigate her husband for infidelity, but through his inspecting, he starts to uncover the truths within the Los Angeles water system. The characters of the film have a strange connection with each other, which makes the story rich in depth. This is powerful for the viewer because the potential of the plot can be expanded with extraordinary plot twists and character development. Personally, I thought the Roman Polanski constructed a phenomenal movie, because of the drama aspect. During the modern period we see a growth of towns, an increase of commercial trade, expansion into Atlantic, Renaissance and Reformation. There is also a rise in science. Perhaps because we are focused on knowledge being power. Natural rights are introduced. This leads to the development of parliamentary government. People begin to seek representation in government. Local government parties are changing to centralized government parties. Cities continue to grow and a change from the rural environment to and urban centered environment is seen. Agriculture and handicraft used to be a big part of the medieval times. In the modern era we see and increase in manufacturing and industry. The importance on local production and consumption is changed to a concentration in growth of commerce and trade and expanding markets. There is an increase in free labor, problems with citizenship are introduced and people become very conscience of proper forms of hygiene. What was once seen as a closed universe, fixed in time, space and purpose, is now viewed as an open universe. We became open to new discovery, dimension and infinite cosmos. Zircon Zircon makes a nice gem but its out of favor these days. Zircon- zirconium silicate or ZrSiO4- is a hard stone, ranking 7 ½ on the Mohs scale, but other stones are harder and its colors arent unique. Tradition has a slim dossier on zircon; one site says that it was reputed to aid sleep, bring prosperity, and promote honor and wisdom, but hey, just having the money to own jewels is good for that. It does have some minor mineralogical distinctions. Its the only gem in the tetragonal crystal class, for what that is worth. And its the densest of the major gemstones, but that means a zircon of a given carat weight is smaller than any other gem of equal weight. Maybe zircon can gain more respect if we look at its value to geologists. Zircon grains occur almost everywhere there are sediments because the mineral is so tough. It rises through the crust in igneous rocks and is eroded into the stream system, washed out to sea, and laid down in the sediment beds where it becomes part of the next cycle of sandstone and shale- totally unaffected! Zircon is the ultimate geological recyclable; it can even endure metamorphism. That makes it a great indicator mineral. If you find it in granite in one place, and in a sandstone somewhere else, you have learned something about the geologic history and geographic setting that brought the zircons from the first to the second place. The other thing about zircon is its impurities, especially uranium. The uranium-lead (U-Pb) system of dating rocks has been refined to great accuracy, and U-Pb zircon dating is now a precise tool for rocks as old as Earth itself, some 4.6 billion years.
